(*1959)
Iva Tajovská made her debut in 2006 with the book of short stories Jepičí hvězdy (Ephemeral Stars). Seven successful novels followed, including Matky matek (Mothers of Mothers, 2007), Jarmark obnažených duší (The Fair of Naked Souls, 2010) or Podlaha z trávy, strop z hvězd (The Floor Made of Grass, The Ceiling Made od Stars, 2016).
In the loose trilogy: Odpusť, že jsem se vrátil (Forgive Me for Coming Back, 2018), Hořící nebe (The Burning Sky, 2019) and Než se rozdělíme (Before We Part, 2021), the author focuses on the fates of several families tormented by the tragic or pivotal events of the 20th century. Also the family saga And the Lamp Was Burning Still (2022) tells a story set in modern Czech history.
Iva Tajovská draws on what is close to her heart. Her characters are powerful in their rawness, dramatic events of the human life are hidden behind their unassuming ordinaryness. The author presents her characters with empathy, but not uncritically, and her prose is therefore authentic and free of simplistic shortcuts.
