Wetzky, Karl von

(1931–2001)

Karl von Wetzky (Karel Vrchovecký), a Czech-German writer of German origin, was born in Opava in 1935. He held various occupations in Czechoslovakia. From the 1960s he was a newspaper editor and also worked for the radio and television. In the 1970s, he published mostly non-fiction with historical themes in the Czech language. In 1978 he moved to West Germany and published a number of short stories in German. In 1994 he published his best known and most artistically valuable novel Říkali mu Gojele (Gojele). Wetzky died in 2001 of heart failure during a study trip to the US.
